Community Service Project 2018

We are excited to have you join the College of Charleston Class of 2022.  As College of Charleston student, you also become part of the community of Charleston, SC.  At CofC, we feel it is important to give back to our community and that starts at orientation.

January 2019 Community Service Project

For January 2019 orientation, we are asking for donations for the College of Charleston food pantry - the Cougar Pantry.  As a result of a student-driven initiative to help students who face food insecurity, the College has set up a food pantry.  Any College of Chalreston student in need can get dry good and hygience products at no cost.

Community Service Project History

For the summer 2017 and January 2018 orientation program, we facilitated a school supply drive.  At each orientation session, we collected school supplies from students and families to help the teachers in our communities. All supplies were donated to the local organization, Teachers' Supply Closet.  We also invite our faculty and staff on campus to participate.

We are proud that over 1,000 items were donated by the College of Charleston Class of 2021, CofC families, current CofC students, faculty and staff in the summer and fall of 2017. We are challenging the Class of 2022 to beat that number! Bring your donated items to orientation or purchase them once you arrive on campus.

There are over 16,400,000 Children Living in Poverty in the US.

That is more than 1 in 5 children. They may not have access to even the most basic of school supplies. A backpack filled with the tools they need to succeed can change their life.

Why "School Supplies.  Changing Lives?"

Results and research show that when adequately equipped, school children:

  • have a more positive feeling of self-worth;
  • miss fewer days of school;
  • are more attentive in class;
  • have improved classroom behavior, and
  • achieve higher test scores in all academic subjects.
